Who We Are

Teaching With Jamaica partners Texas teachers with Jamaica Link Ministries to provide a yearly professional development conference for Jamaican teachers. We have also built 2 school libraries in the Montego Bay area.

Teach With Jamaica was founded in 2006, by a teacher named Karla Hughes Cass, who had served as a summer missionary to Montego Bay, Jamaica. Through daily interaction with area teachers and children she saw a need for additional educational support. Through discussions with the leadership team of Jamaica Link Ministries (JLM) a partnership was formed to support Jamaican teachers by holding an annual educational conference.

With tremendous help of fellow Texas teachers who share the vision of supporting Jamaican educators, Teach With Jamaica was formed. TWJ became known as Teaching With Jamaica in 2012 when we obtained our Non-Profit 501c3 status.

Our Leadership Team includes:  Patti Gilbert  - President, Donna Walsh - Vice President, Becky Walsh - Accountant, Kathi Bingham- Secretary, and Britni Haskin - Teacher Liaison. The Leadership Team works closely with the staff of Jamaica Link Ministries(JLM).  Pastor Dave Falconer, the head of JLM,  has been a part of TWJ from the very beginning.  The TWJ team is made up of teachers from all over the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Teachers are chosen through an application process, which enables us to maintain a balance of teacher expertise to fulfill the different educational needs of the Jamaican teachers and schools. Texas teachers work together from October through July to write lesson plans, collect supplies, and fundraise for shipping costs.

The team travels to Montego Bay, Jamaica in July. We host a free three day conference for the teachers in the area. We also give away school supplies and materials to the participants. During our week long trip, we also visit area schools and orphanages. In 2018 we had 160 Jamaican teachers participate in the conference.

In 2014 our team expanded to add a Library team. This team has built two school libraries, and helped to move and organize a third. The Library team has also provided training for all three schools on how to utilize their libraries to teach lessons in the classroom. Our 4th Library project is planned for July 2019.
